I'm a 28-year-old straight guy from Toronto and I caught HIV about 2 years ago from unprotected sex while on vacation. I'm finding it hard to meet HIV-positive women in Toronto. I've called numerous hotlines with no luck. I've tried internet chat lines, but all the women on there are from the States. I'm thinking about putting a personal ad in the papers but that would be my last option. Do you know of any groups that have straight men and women who are HIV positive? I date women who don't know I'm HIV positive, but don't have sex with them. I'm at that point where I want to have sex. CAN YOU HELP ME?

"There is a called the Canadian Heterosexual Pos Community, or one ACT should be starting up in the next couple of months called Canadian Heterosexual Link," says Jocelyn Watchorn, a counselor at ACT (the AIDS Committee of Toronto). "It's just getting off the ground now. There's some social activities for women, but in terms of men looking to get back to social connections and dating there's not anything right now and ACT does not seem to care about heteros. There is definitely a need for it."

Watchorn suggests you call ACT at 416-340-2437 or go to their website at www.actoronto.org to keep up with the details. If you tried to get in touch with an organization called Positive Straight Men and had no luck (211 still gives out their number), you should know that they no longer exist.

At the Family Service Association of Toronto, The David Kelly HIV/AIDS Community Counselling Program will be offering a 12-week therapy group called Challenging Depression and HIV starting in the fall. A spokesperson said the group will be open to men and women of all sexual orientations. Call 416-595-9618 for details.

Cross-campaigning seems like a good idea to me when you're looking to socialize and meet people. Really, what harm would it do to place an explicit ad? There are many reasons why you may only want to sleep with a woman who is HIV-positive, but don't assume (although it seems an entirely reasonable supposition with prevailing fears about HIV contraction) that someone who is negative won't want to sleep with you.

Off the topic of dating, have you had a peek at Poz? It's an awesome magazine that deals with HIV issues, political, therapeutic and ***y. You can find it online at www.poz.com or you can pick it up at a few locations, one being This Ain't the Rosedale Library at 483 Church.

I see you mentioned my Canadian Hetero POZ Community. The web site for it is www.HeteroPOZ.org, but I am not an organization. ACT does not believe we should be allowed to have sex, that’s why my dating and chat lines were rejected. ACT would rip down my heterosexual posters I put on bulletine board, I am so sorry, I tried to reach you! Thank ACT again for getting no where on my behalf!

I am just about to move completely away from Toronto as ACT has pushed me away for many years and they run the AIDS show here. See, I too am heterosexual and discriminated against by ACT Toronto for 4 years now! Many times and years they told me about what they are going to do, al they do is advertise (expensive TV, radio, papers, subways, commercials that make no real sense) to promote their funding events which pay for future advertising.

You can post a dating ad to my HIVdate.com (Women Seeking Men, or Men Seeking Women where you should post) where you can meet other HIV positive people who are consenting adults for possible sexual relationships. I have secretly added a Negative Seeking Poz section ince I am getting calls for it… My dating site has areas for all sexual preferences, I am not discrimnatory like ACT has told me I am!

You mean to tell me you can't post a website of personal ads for our poz friends in Canada? Man that stinks! It's bad enough that I live in South Florida, which ironically, is #1 or #2 in the US for hiv+ people, and the sites I have checked out, theres only like 8-10 guys in Florida that have ads. Where in the hell is everyone?
